Jesus Christ you can’t make this shit up
So, when you call into a debt collection agency (at least where I worked) if you wanted to set up an automatic payment plan there was a verification process that had to be set up to ensure we had to proper permissions to run future payments. This was granted through a link in either e-mail or text message and whichever the debtor chose, it would also let them know 3 days in advance before every withdrawal and it would send a message if a payment failed. It’s important to note that these messages are automatic and actually say “DO NOT REPLY”.
Me: McNuggeteer
Cl: Clueless lady
Me: “(Insert company name), this is McNuggeteer speaking. How can I help you?”
CL: “Hi, my payment plan hasn’t been charging my account and no one’s been replying to my texts.”
Me: “…Texts?”
Cl: “Yeah, I’ve been messaging you guys to fix this!”
Me: “Okaaay, let’s see what’s going on here”
I pull up the screen and have her verify all of the necessary information
Me: “Yeah, ok it looks like we’ve missed the last 3 payments. There are no notes about you reaching out to us though ma’am.”
Cl: “No, I know I’ve messaged you multiple times-“
Me: “Ma’am, what do you mean when you say you’ve been ‘messaging’ us? We don’t work with texts. “
Cl: “You guys have been telling me that my payments been failing through my phone and nobody replies when I write back!”
Me (rubbing my forehead because banging my head on the table would be audible): “Ma’am. Those are automatic texts. Automatic means a robot is sending them. Let me get you over to your proper account representative and they can help you from here.” Luckily the rep was sitting 1 desk over from me so she already heard everything. She was laughing too, until I told her this was her account (Mwahahahaha).
After that of course I had to go see my manager to tell her that I’d just experienced a new level of stupidity. The entire office had a laugh at that.
But the fact that a grown woman could survive for that long though and be THAT… I can’t even think of the word. Dumb? Ignorant? Without common sense (I mean she never even tried to call us until then!)? Whatever the word the fact that she could be that THAT and still be a functional human being astounded me.
