Customer didn’t read the instructions…

I was working for a cellphone company, as tech support escalations where we did call backs to troubleshoot etc.

A customer’s phone needed to be replaced through warranty, for some issues I can’t recall off the top of my head at the moment. So I walked him through the warranty exchange, read him the terms and conditions, even went over what to do when he receives his new phone.

I call him back when the new phone arrives, help him switch everything over to the new phone. With the new phone from warranty exchange there’s a letter recapping what to do with the old phone. If it has a removeable battery, take the back off and remove the battery. If it’s a unibody phone and the battery can’t be removed, send the whole phone as it is.

Now…here’s where his glorious intelligence shines through. This man decided that he didn’t need to read the letter recapping instructions and that his phone’s battery could be removed, it would just take a bit of work.

The man used a butter knife. To try and remove the back of the phone. To take the battery out of the phone.

While he wasn’t the most horrid customer I’ve ever experienced he was certainly unpleasant enough for me to enjoy educating him on how he voided his warranty and would be charged several hundred dollars for the replacement phone because he decided to ignore me, the instructions I’ve read off to him before, as well as the letter detailing what to do and what will happen should he mess up the device.
