Idiot Day

[ad_1]

I worked at a retail call center, and one day we had a high call volume and seemingly the stupidest callers ever to grace gods green earth. 85% of the ones I spoke to had little to no useful and identifying information ready, and 75% of those people didn’t know what it was, where to find it (even though it was written on our ads), or didn’t even have it on hand. Thankfully, only 15% were actively rude or combative when asked.

As I’ve mentioned in another post, it’s hilarious how many people will claim to be “your best customer” or “a long time customer”yet not know basic things about our ordering process.

After that, it was basic questions that could easily have been answered if they read the ad or went on our website. We were timed for each call, so it was annoying when someone called the wrong line or said “hi, I just have a couple of questions,” and then would insist on me taking their order (when ending the call there and them placing the order itself would keep my average handle time low.

People who didn’t know what they wanted to order (or even the name or item number).

People arguing prices that they absolutely could have price checked online prior to the call.

I finally had to take something strong for my headache. Trying to remain polite and pleasant and helpful was a Herculean task. I had an older person who received something from us as a gift pull the “I’m X years old and not good with technology,” but she DID receive the confirmation email (that had instructions in it) and didn’t talk to the friend that ordered it for her AT ALL. I had to hold her hand the entire time, as if she was an illiterate 5 year old, and she was constantly being pissy and exasperated and not even following the instructions I offered.
