Customer: “What’s a reference number?”

Every day, I have to offer “Would you like a reference number?” at the beginning of the call, and every day I hear the response “What’s a reference number?”

How do people not know what this is? Even just by the context?

Anyone have a clear & concise way of explaining a reference number? I’ve just been saying things like “It’s a number associated with your call log in case you need to call back and speak with another agent about this issue” but I feel like there’s a better way.
