Got called a racist (I’m not)

We take calls for a company that works with Medicaid recipients, not Medicare. That’s important here. If you do not have Medicaid, I quite literally cannot help you. People usually call anyway to tell me I’m a bad person because “Medicaid is for people who don’t want to work” (while I’m sitting there awkwardly on Medicaid.) But we do refer to a company that’s pay out of pocket if someone doesn’t qualify, because it’s way cheaper in terms of what callers are looking for. If someone calls and tells me right off the bat they don’t have Medicaid, what I’m supposed to do is send them into a VM, but I always ask (I’m not supposed to, but just in case it helps someone) if they wanna hear about the referral company, because it’s helpful. I know that because one of my family member buys from them and always says how much cheaper it is than Walmart. WALMART. It’s cheaper than Walmart! Anyway, this old lady calls in, and right off the bat tells me she’s called before and is gonna report us (they usually say this if they don’t qualify and are mad about it) So me being me, I thought “well maybe this would help” and asked if she wanted to hear about: Caller: WHY ARE YOU GIVING ME THE RUNAROUND. Me: I…uh..I just thought it would be helpful cuz you said you didn’t have Medicaid- Her: I TOLD YOU, I HAVE MEDICARE. Me: yes ma’am, we work through Medicaid. Would you like to know what the difference between the two is? I think that may be where the confusion i- Her: I HOPE YOURE NOT SPEAKING TO ME THIS WAY BECAUSE I AM A BLACK WOMAN Me: [absolutely stunned, never saw this coming, total first] absolutely not ma’am I’m speaking to you just like I would anyone els- Her: I SHOULD HOPE SO. GIVE ME YOUR SUPERVISOR. Me: one moment… so I called my supervisor and explained the situation, explaining I literally do not know how it came to this point but I promised (and they could listen to the recording if there was an actual problem) I was being my normal preppy helpful “at work self” and my supervisor being my supervisor she totally understood and was sure it was fine. By the time I was going to transfer the call, the lady hung up. But she called back, and lo and behold gets my supervisor (they also answer calls.) I was sitting there nervous in my chair for a bit when a couple minutes later I get a message from my supervisor “Well she was a fucking PEACH” Nothing came of it, but I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. The sort of back and forth about “giving her the run around” ie me trying to help and digging myself into a deeper hole, went on for longer than that but that’s the dialogue that’s burned into my brain.
