Back in ’99 I worked for a British phone company in the billing department. One day I get a call from a customer wanting to discuss some phone numbers that had appeared on his bill. So, I go through security questions, an vs look at his bill. I’m shocked by what I see. His monthly phone bill is just over £1,500.00, which, given that my rent at the time – 2 bedroom flat – was £450.00, this was an astonishing amount. I look more carefully and find hundred or perhaps thousands of calls to premium rate sex lines (well, presumably sex lines)
I asked the customer where he wanted me to start, and he only wanted to identify a couple of local rate calls. I found the information he wanted, he said thank you, and hung up.
A colleague saw me, with my mouth still agape, and asked if it was (customer name), and I said that it was. He then says to me, “that guy calls every month with the same sort of question, and is bill is always around £1,500.00. All sex lines. Its amazing, I mean he could hire a prostitute every day and spend less”
I’ve never had a customer like that again.
