The title really says it all, but here goes.
I used to do tech support, don’t anymore. I got a promotion a year ago and now I work more so on the corporate side of the company.
My husband is deployed, so when he does call, it’s usually from an odd phone number so I typically pick up. I answered this call and a very flustered dude, who we’ll call FD comes on the line.
FD: Is this ????
Me: uh, no? Sort of? I work there, but this is my personal phone number.
FD: Well your number is listed as .
Me: Okay. Where did you find it?
FD: My media person found it. Anyway, I’m speaking with you now so you can help me with my .
Me: Okay, well you still need to call technical support, I’m not going to help you and this is my personal phone number – I pay for it, not my company.
FD: Why doesn’t anyone answer?
Me: I don’t know, but regardless you have to keep calling.
FD apologizes for bothering me after I repeatedly tell him that he can’t call employee’s personal phone numbers. I know I should have hung up, but I feel like he would have likely complained and I would have gotten in trouble.
I spoke to leadership about it, unfortunately there’s nothing they can do…so that’ll suck a lot if FD attempts to dox me or something.
I know, very anti-climactic story, but I’ve never had a customer with a company I’ve worked for FIND my phone number and think that it’s remotely acceptable to call and then demand technical support.
