I got my life threatened for trying to do my job

A few years ago, I worked at a call center selling health insurance. Basically the phone would automatically dial the number that pops up on the screen. We would talk to them about what we offer and have them to call back to our desk number to sign up. If someone picked up that wasn’t the one we were calling (such as the Husband or Wife of who we are calling) and ask us not to call back we had to tell them that unless they have power of attorney or guardianship of the health of the person we’re calling, we can’t honor that request. Most people would understand and say ok and let the person we were trying to reach know about why we were calling. Except for one woman, we will call her Karen because of course.

My phone dialed out to a Mr. P and Karen picks up the phone.

Me: Hello, my name is OP, and I’m calling from Company name. May I speak with Mr. P.

Karen: That’s my husband, what is this about and what is Company Name?

Me: I’m calling to talk to Mr. P about his healthcare insurance. I must let you know this call may be recorded for quality assurance and training purposes. Is Mr. P available?

Karen: NO HE IS NOT. I TOLD YA’LL NOT TO CALL MY HOUSE ANYMORE.

I look at call detail and see there was only one call before me and no notes.

Me: Ma’am do you have power of attorney or guardianship over your husbands health?

Karen: NO NOW STOP CALLING MY HOUSE.

Me: Ma’am I’m sorry but without your husband’s say so, I can honor that request. We would need him to say that he doesn’t want to receive calls.

Karen: WHAT, DO I HAVE TO COME UP THERE AND PUT A GUN TO YOUR HEAD TO GET YOU TO STOP CALLING ME?

Me: (thinking “Good luck”) Ma’am, these calls are recorded.

Karen: I DON’T CARE STOP CALLING OR I WILL HAVE TO PUT A GUN TO YOUR HEAD TO GET REMOVED FROM THE CALLING LIST.

Me: Ma’am as I said earlier I can’t take this request.

Karen slams the phone on the hook.

I put the number back in cue . It would receive another call in 15 minutes. It was the end of my shift and I had a Grinch looking grin on my face when I left.
