(obligatory this didn’t happen to me statement) I work in the call center for an insurance company, on the help desk so I don’t speak with our customers so this didn’t happen to me, but here’s a recent tale.
Customer calls in upset that their auto policy premium has increased, tells us they have a new policy with another company and wants to cancel their policy with us. Fine, no problem, they didn’t qualify for any additional discounts so we couldn’t have given them a lower rate anyway so we cancel the policy at their request. Either later that day or a couple days later they call back in, turns out they didn’t get another policy and have now been involved in an accident and are wanting us to reactivate their policy to cover the loss. Yeah, no. I really hope they weren’t at fault in that accident or have a stock pile of cash on hand.
