Two weeks left in call centre hell…

That’s right, in two weeks, I escape the call centre environment. My first job, 16 years ago was working in a call centre for a major high street bank. I was there for five years and thought I had escaped as I got some admin work, but then met my now wife. Because of her work we have moved around a lot and call centre jobs have always been the easiest ones to get.

Currently, I am working in a call centre dealing with housing benefit claimants. It has been the most stressful 5 months of my life.

The calls range from heartbreaking to downright absurd. I have hears awful tales of abuse and addiction but then you get the odd call that just makes you despair even further, because as we all know, a call with an idiot is worse than one with someone who has a genuine issue.

The lady in question swore blind that there were 6 weeks between August 14th and September 10th. When I asked her if she had a calendar in front of her, she told me, “I don’t fucking need one”

Fair enough, love.

But in two weeks, I am free. I shall finish work at 5pm and 12 hours later I will be flying to Naples for the week. On my return, I will be starting a new job as a lab technician.

I don’t have any experience, but what I have learned in call centres got me the job: communication, being able to work to KPIs and SLAs, you know what I mean.

So I guess the whole reason for this post (aside from me being utterly fucking gleeful) is to show that while working in a call centre is utter shit, it can help you find the right job.

Dust off those CVs people, and good luck!
