Self-Defeating Callers

[ad_1]

Me: Thank you for calling ABC Physician’s office answering service, how may I help you?

Patient: Yes, I need to speak with a doctor. They were supposed to call in two prescriptions for me, I’m in a lot of pain and they were supposed to call me back. That was yesterday and no one called me.

Me: Ok ma’am, I can take a message for you and page the on call provider. Did you check with the pharmacy to see if they received the prescriptions?

Patient: No, I didn’t! They (the doctor’s office) told me they would call me back yesterday and they didn’t and I’ve been waiting!

Me:… so you haven’t called the pharmacy?

Patient: No!

She then goes into a rant, the point seeming to sail straight over her head. She tells me how her bulging discs are causing constipation and how she “can’t shit” and how angry she is that she never got a call back.

I quickly take her message and send it off.

You can’t tell me she’s that dumb. She knows she can call her pharmacy and check on those prescriptions, which is what most people do before calling me to have a provider paged. She’s only hurting herself when she chooses willful ignorance. How these people function in life is a mystery to me.
