Caller figuratively shot himself in his foot today

I work for a state agency. Over the past few years there have been multiple extensions on for Unemployment in many states and from the federal government. The federal extensions ended 9/4/21 and the state extensions ended at various times.

I had a caller today who insisted we owed him benefits because the system showed he had a balance and he knew there were some weeks he was not able to collect because he collected too much at once.

This did not make sense to me because there is no maximum amount we can pay at once. I explained what he saw remaining was from the federal extension but he is not eligible to be paid for it because he was paid through 9/4 on the extension.

We kept going around in circles over and over again. I tried to assume him that he was paid every dollar he was eligible but he kept disagreeing.

That is when i looked *real* close at his claim. I noticed an examiner had ruled that he was let go for cause and he had an initial disqualification that he served and I saw that the appeal system confirmed the examiners decision.

This posed an issue because one extension he received was not valid for people who had a disqualification so now that I saw this I had to start the paperwork to disqualify him for the extension he should not have received and he will need to pay that money back now.

Had he accepted the information I gave him the first or even third time I would not have looked so closely at the claim.
