Another call from the Auto Glass Claims Dept- How do you not know what deductible you chose when you took out a policy on your vehicle?

This gets me EVERY DAMNED TIME. People call in to file a glass claim on their insurance. Insurance companies pay us to file their claims for them. They are simply not staffed to do this themselves. And don’t get me started on Agents who call in asking me “How do I do this or that?” I am not an agent. You don’t know your job? Ok sorry, I am getting off course here.

A woman called in yesterday. She has a 2021 BMW fancy car. I begin by expressing sympathy for her glass damage and let her know with a few questions I can help her file her claim and get her set up with a shop to fix the damage.

We get through most of the call. When it comes to her deductible, she has a $1000 deductible. For those who do not know, that means YOU MUST pay the first $1000 before insurance will pay for the rest. My gosh, this lady hit the roof. She lost her mind. Started yelling that it was outrageous, and why should she pay if she has insurance…I mean she went on and on for 5 minutes about how much she pays the lizard company every month and why should she pay more. I said my “Yes ma’am I understand your frustration” yada yada yada. She demanded I waive it. I cannot. She says she will just go pay cash and she is changing insurance companies. Ok. Have fun finding someone to replace the glass in your high end car and do the recalibrations of your safety system for less than your deductible.

Lovely customer #2 called in…has an 09 Honda Civic. Broken windshield. Says Massachusetts law states all insurance companies must provide glass damage free of charge. I sympathize, state I’d be happy to help him file a claim. I think he is stoned because he sounds like an idiot. Turns out he carries limited liability and has no glass coverage. He starts yelling. He throws a fit. Whines to the person next to him. Insists we have to pay for it. Why does he even have insurance if it won’t cover glass? Insists I told him he was covered when he opened the policy. I explain no one here at this extension sells policies, nor do we make policy. He threw stuff around the room, screamed again, called me names, and hung up.

When you go shopping for insurance, instead of just asking “What is the lowest payment per month I can get”..how bout asking…What is my deductible on collision or accident? What is my deductible on glass? Often times the higher the monthly payment, the lower the deductible.

I get it. Insurance is a necessary evil, but these days with newer technology, out of pocket is almost always gonna cost you more. The cheapest glass place is not always the best. Ask if they warranty their job to include defects in glass, or poor workmanship. If they put in the glass, it leaks and ruins the computer in your dash, will they cover that? There is Price and there is Value. The two should not be confused.

Gotta go…time to get screamed at some more because someone chose not to educate themselves lol.

Thanks for reading!
