“Well my neighbor said….”

I work in a call center that goes over an electric utility that services a certain area. Some of the Main things that I deal with is talking with people about their bills, how to get caught up, going over payment plans, etc.

One small annoying complaint that people bring up is that they say they talk to their neighbor that lives in a much bigger home than they do and say their neighbor is paying less for their electric bills than the caller is. it’s always that scenario. They never bring up neighbors that live in the same sized places they live in or smaller. They always seem to find or live immediately next to someone that has a bigger place than they do.

They call in wanting to know why that is. I always have to tell them that I can’t speak for the neighbor’s place and what’s going on with their account but I am glad to talk with the caller about their own account.

Once I wish I could probably snap and say things like “gee, I don’t know, maybe it could be because the electrical appliances In Their home could be possibly more energy efficient? Or the place is better insulated therefore doesn’t leak as much cold air in the summer or hot air in the winter? Or maybe they just don’t sit around and watch tv as much during their days off? Could be that they’re lying to you or you’re lying or exaggerating something about this situation to me? Could be 100 different things.”

But we can’t tell people that because then some customers will take that as “well the energy company told us to buy a new fridge and dish washer to lower our bills.” And when they do they’re still surprised that their energy bill is still just as high and that didn’t help at all they’ll want us to pay for what they spent on their new appliances they bought.
