I told a customer “you are being disrespectful to me as a technician”

I’ve been working in a call center in some capacity or another for over 10 years and I absolutely hate dealing with customers. In the past I’ve been better about getting yelled at and dealing with obnoxious people, but it just seems recently, what little resistance I’ve had to dealing with it is gone. I no longer try to kill them with kindness when someone is yelling at me, it killed me inside to do it every time in the past, and I hate that I didn’t get push back. Assholes do not deserve niceness back.

My most recent bout dealing with an asshole was about 2 months back. This guy was having issues with his internet service and had multiple repeat tickets, he didn’t want to do any of my troubleshooting steps because “I’ve done that before for similar issues and it didn’t work”. Rule number with troubleshooting is never got by past issues as your basis for your current one. The guy just kept yelling “fix it fix it fix it” over and over. I kept telling him there is nothing for me to check or do, he wasn’t having any of it, he kept demanding I send someone out or to fix it myself. I finally had enough and in a firm tone replied “you are being disrespectful to me as a technician. I am trying to help you, but you are being disrespectful.” I wish I could say that did anything, he was taken back for a few seconds, but then more or less kept going on and on until I finally punted the call to the next day and asked my supervisor to join me so I wouldn’t have to deal with him alone. I still feel good for standing up for myself
