Can’t you effing well read?

This happened in the nineties.

A department which printed a lot of stuff got a new colour printer. When it arrived, I had to install it. Unusually, I read the installation manual beforehand and discovered that this printer used coloured wax blocks in place of ink or toner which was heated up and melted inside the printer. In the manual it warned in red, capital letters not to move the printer unless it had been switched off and left for some hours to let the ink solidify again. Dire warnings of serious damage if this instruction was not followed.

So I installed the printer and put a big notice on it saying not to move the printer unless it had been switched off for at least 3 hours.

A few weeks later I got a ticket from the department – new printer not working. I went up there and walked to where the printer was, and it wasn’t there. The guy who reported the problem saw me and told me it was now at the other end of the office.

You can guess the rest. The huge notice on the front of the printer was still there, they had moved the printer without switching it off. It was ruined, I lost my cool and made the title statement to the department manager.

We made them pay for a new one out of their own budget. Amazingly nobody got reprimanded or disciplined for this!!
