Phone numbers are more special than SSN I guess?

So I work in a call center for a popular chain of catalogs. Most of my customers are older and can be a bit, persnikity with their information. I’m used to this but the info some people give out and won’t give out continues to astound me.

Take the following. I will be me Tesla. Customer will be Ol for Odd Lady

Me: “Good afternoon, this is Tesla How may I help you?

OL: I’d like to place an order.

Me: I can absolutely help you with that. Can I please get you ‘insert verification info” thank you and what’s the best phone number to reach you at?

OL: I won’t give my phone number.

(Now keep in mind dear readers there is a phone number on the account already which I can see and I can also clearly see she’s calling me from the same number so her phone number isn’t anything too secret and her attitude is a little startling to say the least. I mentally peg her as maybe going to give me trouble later but we’ll see.)

Me: ” Oh, uhh alright then. No worries …

( Yada yada yada rest of the call till we get to the payment part which is what I was worried about. When you pay you have two options you can either give me your card number or you can use the buy now pay later option. The latter of which requires personal information to open. Much to my surprise Miss, I refuse to give my phone number, had in fact, given someone else her social security number to open a credit account already. I thankfully had no more issues with her for the rest of the call but to be so snippy with her phone number of all things and so free with her social, struck me as pretty odd.)

TLDR: Lady refuses to give her phone number while verifying her account but did at some point give someone her social security number to open a line of credit.
