Older lady called in today. I work for a large financial firm.
Where I work, the transactions can be time sensitive (think buying stock but I’m not saying that’s what I do👀)
Client called in and wanted to cancel previous transactions she had put in that she didn’t want anymore. She also asked me to check the price of transactions. She ALSO asked me to create new transactions.
She was doing this all simultaneously so that I had to move back and forth between screens. If I delay on the transaction, the price of the transaction can change from second to second.
I told her the price of the transaction, then she asked to see what she had put in before, then she asked me to cancel it, then create a new transaction.
Me, trying to be nice “I apologize it take our systems a bit to go between screens”
Karen “well you ‘systems’ are costing me money aren’t they?”
I ignored and went on with the call.
I read her the price of one of her transactions and then read it back to her again. “YOU CHANGED THE PRICE IF MY TRANSACTION. YOU SAID $15 not $16b”
“Well ma’am, if I did do that I apologize, I cannot recall giving you the wrong price, but as I’m confirming it with you now, this is the correct price.”
Another confirmation I gave her the price of each product she was purchasing and the overall price. She lost it at the overall price “WHERE DID THAT ANOUNT COME FROM”
When I told her, she complained again that I was too slow and then said “it’s an issue isn’t it, if you’re costing me money. Is this how everyone has to do it?”
“No ma’am, people who want to wuickly do what you are asking typically have their own computer where they do it themselves, I can show you how if you’d like.”
It was at this point she told me she had 5 million dollars. Yeah, I can see that, and I don’t give a shit.
I work with extremely wealthy clients so one of my favorite things about this job is simply showing them I don’t give a shit. I’m not even rude, simply by not kissing their ass and bending over backwards, they lose their mind. They continue to up the ante with ridiculous requests and pointing out how wrong you are.
It’s so fucking funny to me to watch them try harder and harder to make you lose your cool and apologize. Your five million dollars just makes me think that if you’re going through these absurd lengths to try and have some measure of power and control in your life, there is no amount of money or prestige that will fill the valid hole that is your life.
Sometimes after I don’t budge they apologize for how much of an ass they are and tell me everything wrong in their life. I don’t play along there either, I am not their therapist here to validate your lack of self worth or the emotional capacity of a toddler.
I hope they realize that there is no amount of money in the world that will make anyone give a shit besides those who can profit off of them. All they would have to do is be a nice person but I assume they are so deeply flawed that’s not an option.
