Customer: Maybe my name is Joe Smith! Maybe I’m Joe Blow! Joe Johnson? Any of those names showing on your screen??
Me: I’m sorry, sir, are those names supposed to be on this account? I’m not showing–
Customer: Of course not! You know that’s not my name! JOE MILLER JOE MILLER J-O-E M-I-L-L-E-R!! JESUS CHRIST, LADY, DO YOU WANT ME TO SING YANKEE DOODLE DANDY FOR YOU!!?
Me: …okay, thank you for that information, Mr. Miller, the information you’ve provided is sufficient to verify your account. I apologize for the confusion, we do just have to make sure we are speaking with the correct person regarding the correct account…
Customer: You people are so stupid, it’s shit like this that makes me wanna cancel your company and go somewhere else!!
And so on. Why is it so difficult to just give your full name? Why would just a first name be sufficient to verify? Help me understand, please, because I hear it all day long. And then people are inconvenienced when I ask for anything further. I swear, I am just trying to keep your account secure.
