I worked at a call center for a pest control company. One of the services we provided was going out proactively to put a perimeter of insect repellent outside of customers’ homes.
My coworker took a call, and even though I was three desks away, I could hear the woman screaming down the other end of the phone.
Apparently she came home and smelled a skunk, but she didn’t realize it was a skunk. She thought it was a gas leak, so she called 911 and the fire department rushed out.
My coworker was baffled as to how this had anything to do with our company. The woman said “one of your guys was here yesterday! Whatever chemicals he put down attracted the skunk!” My coworker tried to explain that all we did was put down insect repellent, and nothing that we did would attract skunks, but as you can imagine, the woman could not be reasoned with.
