How not to re number a customers phone.

So I had a customer call in. They said that they had just gotten their daughter a phone on our network and when they tried to text their daughter, the texts went to someone else. She spoke to that person who said that they had been wirh us before but switched to another company and kept the number. So I check with one of my L2s. They determine it was an error on our system that the number didn’t get removed from the available number pool, and tell me to go ahead and renumber the phone, and waive the fee for it.

Simple enough, right? Hahaha, wrong. I follow policy and select the nearest store to pick a number. I tell them the number. They don’t want it. They want a very specific area code and exchange code. I go through the whole list of stores to check. Have some close ones but not the right one. Nope. They give me another number. Go back through the list. Some more close ones. Nope. By this point the call is nearing an hour, most of it spent trying to find the number they want.

It gets better. By the time I go through the list again, they finally decide they’ll take the very first number I gave them. I prepare myself for more torture when I ask them first what digit of the last 4 they want it to start with, 0-9. Thankfully, and I think they were tired too, they said it didn’t matter. So I was able to select a random one and give it to them. The call took almost an hour and 20 minutes to do…. all because they wanted to be picky. My L2 had even told me that if they didn’t like the similar numbers, well tough shit, they were gonna be stuck with the original number I offered.
