This happened the other day. I work at a bank, it was just past midnight and there were no supervisors/managers around. Caller calls in , pretty deep voice, but I can tell she could be female, and she asking for us to release her funds from a disability direct deposit payment that she’s supposed to be getting today so that she can pay her credit card (at another financial institution) because she apparently has some preauthorized charges coming out from the credit card that would bounce and she would incur more charges if that happened.
I told her that direct deposits do process overnight, and if she’s expecting a direct deposit scheduled for today, it should be there in the morning. Her account is literally $0 and there’s nothing I can see about pending or incoming direct deposits. She complains saying that she should be getting the money in her account because it is technically the day of the deposit since it is past midnight and I try to explain that it doesn’t work like that and to be patient. She then claims that this other bank does their direct deposit right at midnight but she doesn’t bank with them because they are not trans-friendly while we are trans-friendly and asks to be speak with a supervisor and I told her I’d be more than happy to but there’s no supervisors or managers around. We go back and forth for a while for a good 15-20 minutes. She says she’s recording the conversation and asks for my name, ID# and says she’ll be filing a complaint with some agency. I give her the information she was looking for and then she says she’s just kidding she wasn’t recording and then all of a sudden another voice comes on.
Again, deep voice, but this one sounds masculine. I don’t know if it was literally another person or if the caller just changed the tone of their voice. He claims he was listening in to the call and that he is from “head office” of OUR bank. He’s asking me things like why I’m not willing to help the client. Am I discriminating because she’s transgendered? Do I want to lose my job? What am I going to do about it? In my head I’m thinking why would head office be listening in to this call at midnight of all times, this is not something I’ve ever heard of in the 2 years I’ve been here, wouldn’t they be familiar with our banking system and why is this person attacking me if we’re supposedly from the same organization. I ask him for his name and he says he’s the district manager and that he’s currently in the bahamas and doesn’t have time to deal with this.
At this point I felt the call was pointless there was nothing I could do, and I’m talking to someone trying to lie his way to get what he wants so I just said I had to disconnect and hung up.
One of the strangest calls I’ve ever had in my time here.
