Is it me or was this over the top?

I was just thinking about this incident.

We were going through an insanely busy period. More calls, voicemails and emails than we could handle. It was so busy that I was even going into work an hour before the phone line was supposed to open just to try to clear the backlog of emails. This was a contact centre for subscriptions and one particular product was doing my head in with all the errors (I left the company years ago, thank goodness.).

Put it this way, we had double ups because our system didn’t include a ‘completed’ screen when subscribers signed up online. We were getting about 150 calls minimum each day (that we managed to pick up, that is, lord knows how many we missed), plus about 300 emails. I also had to do administrative stuff, like chargebacks (to reverse credit card payments), send out letters (new subscription, payment reminders) for about 4000 customers on just one product (which for us was a lot), never mind the rest of them (we had a few) and I only had one other person taking calls while I was trying to do everything else.

Anyway, I get an email from one lady and fire off a response. She emails back with her reply in ALL CAPS telling me how rude and unprofessional I was for not using a greeting in the email. I had over 200 emails to reply to. So I forgot to use a greeting. So you tell me: was it me or was her reaction just way over the top?
