“You need some more training sweetie”

I work in a government call centre that aims to help disadvantaged tenants to navigate the legal system regarding issues with their landlord.

The caller had been served with an eviction notice for causing a nuisance (neighbour complained to the owners corporation and landlord several times about her, and the police have attended for noise complaints).

Caller said the police had been called several times and apparently the neighbour was the one in the wrong and she had no way to move out on the date given on the eviction notice.

In my state the landlord can’t forcibly remove a tenant unless there’s a court ordered warrant granted at a possession hearing (which is then carried out by police), and there are no provisions for a tenant to challenge the eviction notice until the possession hearing.

I advised her that if she doesn’t leave, she would have to wait until the hearing and attend to contest the eviction, and no I would not be calling her landlord to ask for an extension (despite her yelling) as there is a process that needs to be followed, per the legislation.

Cue lots of yelling about how no one can help her, and she doesn’t have time to go to court, and in the most condescending tone “you need some more training sweetheart” then she hangs up. I have a sneaking suspicion she is the one being a nuisance to the neighbours. Fuck her.
