Why do people expect to not have to pay up front for no contract service?

I work for a large nation-wide American cable/internet company. We are 100% no contract.

I have people calling in every day to set up tv and internet and voice service and we have this tool that checks the customer’s previous customer history (NOT a credit check) as well as geographic trends to see if they have previously payed their bill on time to determine whether or not a prepayment is required.

Before I worked here, I didn’t even know that you could call and order service without prepaying for it. I would NEVER call to set up service that I did not have money for.

The fact that people get angry and ask why they have to pay up front baffles me… like.. we are coming to install our biggest tv package at your house tomorrow with free installation and no contract.. why do you expect to not have to pay for it?

Why is it unreasonable for me to ask for you to pay for this luxury that comes with no contract that is 100% refundable (including installation fees if applicable) if you aren’t happy with your service in the first 30 days??
