I used to work in an inbound call center for a major financial services company. An older woman – mid sixties – called in for assistance with her online account, and I pleasantly walked her through the process. I tried to find a way to upsell or add value, but she wasn’t interested, so I began wrapping up the call. I’m ‘me’ and she is ‘OL’:
Me: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
OL: Just one question.
Me: Yes ma’am?
OL: Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your lord and savior?
Me (raised in a Christian home my entire life): Actually, I’ve pledged my fealty to Lord Lucifer and his dark kingdom.
OL: gasps hangs up
I was pleased with myself until quality assurance happened to listen to the call, and I had about 4 levels of management lecturing me about appropriate interactions with customers.
I’m still pleased with myself.
